How Do Braces Work?

Braces can move and correct the positioning and alignment of teeth. By attaching a bracket to each tooth, then connecting them together with an archwire, they guide each tooth into place with gentle and controlled pressure.

Braces 101

How long will I have braces for?
On average, most patients will wear braces from 18 to 24 months. In some cases, some patients will require shorter or longer treatment periods. The treatment will vary based on the complexity of the orthodontic issues. At your free consultation, the orthodontic team at Idaho Orthodontics will give you an estimate time frame based on your needs.
What age is best for getting braces?
Braces can be effective for patients of all ages! The "ideal age" varies, but orthodontic treatment often recommended between ages 9 and 14 when the child has a mix of baby and adult teeth. It is recommended they have an orthodontic evaluation around the age of 7.
Will I need to wear a retainer after wearing braces?
Braces change your smile in big ways, so to maintain what the braces have corrected and shifted, you'll need to wear a set of retainers. After orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will let you know how often you'll need to wear your retainers to retain the treatment's changes.
Do braces hurt?
The process of getting braces and adjusting them may cause some discomfort or soreness. However, the pain is usually mild and temporary. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate any discomfort.
Can I still play sports or musical instruments with braces?
Game on! Yes, you can still participate in sports and play musical instruments with braces. If you play contact sports, you'll need to wear a mouthguard to prevent injury and protect your braces. If you play a wind instrument, playing with braces will get some getting used to, but you'll be back to playing in no time!
How do I clean my braces?
It's extra important to have great oral hygiene while wearing braces. Food can get trapped in-between the wiring quite easily. Be sure to brush your teeth thoroughly after meals, floss daily, and use a special proxy brushes to brush between the brackets and wires.
What foods should I avoid with my braces?
Avoid hard foods, or foods you have to bite into. Braces can be damaged or come loose by chewing on these substances. You should also avoid chewing mindlessly on things like pens or other hard objects which can also hurt your orthodontic work. Some of these foods (popcorn) can also get stuck in your braces and become very uncomfortable–even painful. It’s best to avoid these foods if possible. The teeth movement process can be long. You don’t want to repeatedly damage your brackets and slow the process more.
