Three things not to do when you have braces:

1. Don’t drink soda or sugary drinks.
Soda is full of sugar and acid that can damage your teeth, cause cavities, and leave behind permanent white spots. Stick to water, milk, or sugar-free drinks.

2. Don’t use your teeth as tools.
Avoid using your teeth to open packages, tear fishing line, or twist off bottle caps. Braces make your teeth more vulnerable, and doing this can break your brackets—or even chip your teeth.

3. Always wear a mouthguard when playing sports.
Braces and sports don't mix without protection. We’ll even give you a mouthguard if you need one!

Three things not to do when you have braces on:

1. Don’t drink soda pop.
Soda is full of sugar and acids that can damage your teeth, lead to cavities, and cause white spots around your brackets. Stick to water, milk, or sugar-free drinks instead.

2. Don’t use your teeth as a tool.
Avoid opening packages or tearing things with your teeth, like bottles, bags, or even fishing line. Braces make your teeth more vulnerable to damage, and this will almost definitely break your brackets—maybe even chip your teeth.

3. Don’t play sports without a mouthguard.
If you play any sports, wear a mouthguard. A hit to the mouth without protection can damage your braces and your teeth. We’ll even give you a mouthguard if you need one.

We're spilling the tea on how to keep your teeth and braces safe

Why is soda bad for my teeth when I have braces?
Soda contains sugar and acid that can get trapped around your brackets and between your teeth. This greatly increases the risk of cavities and permanent white spots on the enamel. With braces, it’s safer to stick to water, milk, or sugar-free drinks.
Can I use my teeth to open packages if I have braces?
No. Using your teeth to open packages, tear bags, or cut things like fishing line can break brackets, bend wires, or even chip your teeth. Braces already put controlled pressure on your teeth, so extra force from “using them as tools” makes damage much more likely.
Do I really need a mouthguard for sports if I have braces?
Yes. If you play any sport with contact or fast movement (like basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, etc.), you should wear a mouthguard. It helps protect your lips, cheeks, teeth, and braces from injury. Idaho Orthodontics can provide a mouthguard to help keep your smile safe.
What are some better habits to protect my braces and my smile?
To protect your braces and teeth, drink mostly water and avoid sugary or acidic drinks, never use your teeth as tools, wear a mouthguard for sports, and brush and floss every day while following your orthodontist's instructions. These simple habits help you avoid emergencies, keep your treatment on track, and get the best final result when your braces come off.
