Flossing is super important when you have braces. A lot of times people forget to floss, or it's honestly a little more challenging. What can happen is your gums get really puffy, red, and inflamed — you might even see them start to bleed a little bit.

Let me show you how to do it. One thing you can use are floss threaders. You put the floss through the little hole, tie it tight, then thread it up underneath the wire, grab it, and you've got your piece of floss — then you floss like you normally would.

A little cheat we have here are these flossers called Platypus. You can floss right through the teeth with them. The ends are a bit skinnier to fit between the wire and the tooth.

One other thing that can help if your gums are getting really puffy is these Christmas tree brushes. You just use them up above the gums and brush very lightly.

It's super important to floss and keep your teeth clean when you have braces.

How to Floss with Braces | Idaho Orthodontics

How do I floss with braces?
Flossing with braces takes a little extra effort, but it's very doable! You can use a floss threader — thread your floss through the small hole, then guide it up underneath the wire so you can floss normally. Another easy option are Platypus flossers, which have a slimmer end designed to fit between the wire and tooth without the extra steps.
Why are my gums puffy or bleeding since getting braces?
This is usually a sign that the gums aren't getting cleaned well enough. When flossing is skipped or infrequent, gums can become red, swollen, and may bleed. The good news is that with consistent flossing, this typically clears up quickly.
Are there tools that make flossing with braces easier?
Yes! We recommend floss threaders, Platypus flossers, and Christmas tree brushes (also called proxabrushes). The Christmas tree brushes are especially helpful for cleaning just above the gumline — just brush very gently along the gums between brackets.
How often should I floss with braces?
Every day. Flossing daily is one of the most important things you can do to protect your teeth and gums during treatment. Skipping it can lead to swollen gums, bleeding, and even affect your overall results.
